- 1. Educational Objective

In the 21st century, during which science and technology, healthcare, and life sciences are attracting increasing attention, there is a demand for professionals who can contribute to restoring the dignity of human values and enhancing both human physical and mental health. These individuals should possess well-rounded knowledge encompassing historical, philosophical, ethical, legal, administrative, and artistic foundations and be able to understand a broad spectrum of relationships between science, technology, humanity, and society. The goal of this interdisciplinary major is to overcome the divide between humanities/social sciences and biomedical sciences by nurturing professionals in medical humanities who have a comprehensive interdisciplinary understanding and problem-solving skills.

• This interdisciplinary major comprehensively understands and analyzes universal human issues such as health, pain, illness, and death in an integrated manner by linking academic fields such as humanities, healthcare, life sciences, ethics, law, and public administration.
• Going beyond the conventional approach of simply acquiring and producing knowledge, it promotes the ability to understand a diverse range of material from various disciplines, explore holistic values, and logically diagnose and analyze social phenomena.
• In addition, it fosters problem-solving skills and professional competence based on a variety of field experiences.
Career Paths
• Graduate Schools: Degree holders may pursue master’s or doctoral degrees at domestic or foreign graduate schools related to medical humanities (general graduate schools, graduate school of education, medical schools, law schools, etc.) and develop their careers at universities, research institutes, medical institutions, or administrative agencies
• Government Offices: Government agencies (Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Korea National Institute for Bioethics Policy, etc.) or public institutions (National Health Insurance Service, National Pension Service, etc.)
• Corporations: Life-science-related large or small/medium-sized domestic and foreign corporations (pharmaceutical companies, etc.)
• Cultural Institutions and Foundations: Museums (National Museum of Korea, National Folk Museum of Korea, museums operated by local governments, medical science museums, private museums, etc.) or cultural foundations (National Museum Foundation of Korea, etc.)
• Companies in Cultural and Related Industries: Companies in cultural content development related to healthcare (media outlets, film-making companies, medical/pharmaceutical content development companies, etc.)

- 4. Program Completion Requirements

• Credit double-counting between the first major and this interdisciplinary major is permitted starting with students admitted to this interdisciplinary major in the 2023 spring semester. It is not permitted for students admitted before this.
• A minimum of 36 credits must be acquired for program completion.
• A minimum of 6 credits must be acquired from major required courses (Introduction to Medical Humanities and Special Topics in Medical Humanities).
• The following elective courses must be taken:
- A minimum of 6 credits from elective courses in Section A (Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation)
- A minimum of 9 credits from elective courses in Section B (Knowledge in Medicine, Life Sciences, and Healthcare)
- A minimum of 6 credits from elective courses in Section C (Understanding of Ethics, Law, and Public Administration)
• Introduction to Medical Humanities (PMED162) is available for students who have completed at least one course from Section B.
