1. Guidelines for the Academic Affairs of Interdisciplinary Majors

Article 35, Chapter 4 of the Constitution of Korea University (the part concerning interdisciplinary majors); Subsection 2 (Interdisciplinary Majors), Section 2, Chapter 6 of the Regulations of the Academic Affairs of Korea University; Guidelines on the Operation of Interdisciplinary Majors

∙ An interdisciplinary major program is a program that confers two degrees on those who have completed their first major and the minimum required credits (36–81 credits) for another major (recognized as the second major), which combines two or more departments (divisions/schools) and academic fields or topics.

◎ Application for an Interdisciplinary Major

∙ Students must check the website notices for the selection criteria and list of interdisciplinary major courses for each semester and apply for an interdisciplinary major during the designated period. Successful applicants are selected based on the results of an assessment of their various documentation, including their academic plan. Details of the selection criteria are not provided.

(For more information, refer to the separate guidelines provided at the time of application for interdisciplinary majors.)

◎ Course Registration

∙ For course registration, students must refer to the list of established courses for each interdisciplinary major to check the minimum required credits and the total number of credits required for Sections A, B, and C of major required and major elective courses.

∙ For inquiries regarding course registration for major elective courses in each interdisciplinary major, contact the respective department.

∙ Admission to an interdisciplinary major is effective from the starting date of the respective semester.

◎ Credit Acquisition

∙ Acknowledgement of credits acquired from other domestic universities:

For the acknowledgement of credits acquired from other domestic universities, interdisciplinary major students must, before registering for a course offered at another domestic university, confirm with the department chair of their interdisciplinary major program whether the course they intend to take may be acknowledged as a course offered under the interdisciplinary major program by sending the department chair relevant documentation via email providing information such as the name of the university, the name of the course they intend to take, and the course syllabus (credit acknowledgement is not allowed for major required courses). After taking the course, the students must submit the form Designation of Sections for Credit Acknowledgement for Interdisciplinary Majors to the staff responsible for interdisciplinary majors at the Administration Office of the College of Liberal Arts.

(Credits acquired from courses offered at other domestic universities that have not been approved by the department chair of the interdisciplinary major program will not be acknowledged. Refer to the notices on the College of Liberal Arts website for instructions on completing the Designation of Sections for Credit Acknowledgement for Interdisciplinary Majors form.)

∙ Acknowledgement of credits acquired from foreign universities:

Courses offered at foreign universities are subject to credit acknowledgment and not course substitution (i.e., substituted with a course offered by Korea University). Interdisciplinary major students must have the department chair of their interdisciplinary major program approve an original copy of their academic transcript confirmed (i.e., stamped) by the Office of International Affairs and the list of courses completed (along with their syllabus). They must then submit them to the staff responsible for interdisciplinary majors at the Administration Office of the College of Liberal Arts together with the Designation of Sections for Credit Acknowledgement for Interdisciplinary Majors form.

∙ In the event students acquire credits from a first major course and an interdisciplinary major course that are identical, credits acquired from the first major course may be acknowledged as credits acquired from the interdisciplinary major course. However, students must check the total number of double-counted credits permitted under their interdisciplinary major program because it differs between programs.

※ Students who do not have double-counted credits indicated in their graduation assessment must contact kulib1310@korea.ac.kr before the graduation assessment for their interdisciplinary major program is completed (students must indicate their name, student ID, name of their interdisciplinary major, and the name and course code of the course for which double-counted credit acknowledgement is requested).

Students must refer to the list of established courses for their interdisciplinary major to determine the total number of double-counted credits permitted under their interdisciplinary major because it differs between programs. Note that the double-counting of credits is not permitted for students pursuing Medical Humanities as their interdisciplinary major (applies to those admitted in and before the 2022 fall semester).

◎ Graduation

∙ Students only need to complete the minimum number of credits required for graduation for each interdisciplinary major (36 credits); there are no documents that need to be submitted for graduation. However, students must verify with the department (division/school) of their first major regarding the requirements for graduation from their first major program.

∙ For inquiries regarding graduation, including graduation assessment, contact kulib1310@korea.ac.kr (students must indicate their name, student ID, the name of their interdisciplinary major, and the details of their inquiry).

*The Administration Office of the College of Liberal Arts does not calculate the number of credits related to graduation from interdisciplinary majors.

2. Designation of Sections for Credit Acknowledgement for Credit Exchange Programs

*Students intending to have credits acquired from other universities acknowledged as credits acquired for an interdisciplinary major must, before registering for a course offered at another university, confirm with the department chair of the respective interdisciplinary major program whether the course they intend to take may be acknowledged as a course offered under the interdisciplinary major program.
